Commitment to Chemistry
(2005-09-15) Geoff McCaughtrie, Application Sales Technical Nitrates, recently received a Long Service Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry (the professional body for Chemists in the UK). Geoff began his career at Yara in 1992 as an Analytical Chemist before moving over to the wastewater treatment department in 2000. He has a BSc Hons in Applied Chemistry and also a BSc in Earth and Environmental Science. Geoff's award is in recognition for his 10 years service on the Southumbrian committee where he has covered various roles within the group, including Treasurer, Programme Secretary and Chairman. Geoff's local section organises chemistry related science lectures for schools and the public, arranges events for members of the society and also manages a mobile science laboratory for primary schools. Mike Lidgard, Section Secretary, acknowledged Geoff's commitment to the Society by saying, "Geoff has volunteered himself to the committee for 10 years now and has always played a significant part in encouraging a wider audience to be more aware in how chemistry affects us in our day to day lives. His input over this time has always been positive and I look forward to his continuing enthusiasm in the Treasurers position". David Lindores, Local Events Executive, stated, "The Royal Society of Chemistry is the largest organisation in Europe for advancing the chemical sciences. Much of the RSC's work relies upon the goodwill of a strong network of local volunteers, whose efforts result in a varied programme of meetings and social events. As a member, and current Treasurer, of the Southumbria Local Section Committee, Geoff has made a valuable and on-going contribution to local member activities and to the RSC as a whole". Yara has also committed itself to Chemistry in the local area by hosting the SPC Conference, donating redundant equipment to local schools, assisting in the preparation and distribution of the local programme and hosting committee meetings. |
