Prevention or Cure? Alternative odour control strategies
(2005-10-12) The advantages and disadvantages of alternative odour control strategies were discussed at a recent workshop held by CIWEM at Bretton Hall, Wakefield. Yara was a main sponsor of the event. Discussions were based on short introductory presentations, focussing on managing public perception of odour nuisance, asset management issues, health and safety, covering and scrubbing, and chemical dosing. The workshop built on CIWEM's previous event where Yara presented a paper titled "Odour Management - more than just removing a smell." In the paper, techniques for containing odour were contrasted with those for preventing it at source using a solution such as Nutriox®. Nutriox® naturally prevents the anaerobic conditions responsible for odour generation in sewer networks. The Nutriox® process causes a change in the bacterial population in the wastewater and the slime lining the sewer. A bacterial culture is established which not only removes any H2S that has already been formed but also prevents the occurrence of septic conditions by maintaining anoxic conditions where sulphate reducing bacteria cannot thrive.
