Yara sponsors Best Frozen Product Category at UK Food Awards

(2006-02-10) Yara sponsored the Best Frozen Product category at the 2006 Food Manufacturing & Marketing Awards which culminated with an Awards luncheon at the Sheraton Park Lane Hotel, London. Almost 300 guests representing the full spectrum of the UK food industry, ranging from manufacturers to suppliers to retailers to trade bodies, had a very enjoyable afternoon, celebrating excellence within the UK food marketing & manufacturing industries.

Brian Turner, Celebrity chef, was Master of Ceremonies for the afternoon and the award for Best Frozen Product was presented by Yara’s Food Applications Business Manager, Gerard Dore. The eventual winner of the award was the Bottle Green Drinks company for their ‘Simply Sorbet - Elderflower’ range.

The judges described the sorbet as “stunning”. It’s made from the delicate taste of handpicked elderflowers expertly blended with Cotswold spring water and carefully frozen, offering not only a seriously stylish palette cleanser but also a virtually fat free pudding.

The ‘Simply Sorbet’ range had strong competition from the following Frozen Product category finalists;

  1. ‘Dim Sum Selection’ from Harlequin Foods
  2. ‘ Hake Florentine’ from Loxton Foods Ltd.
  3. ‘Green & Blacks Vanilla Caramel Nut Ice Cream’ from Green & Blacks

Gerard Dore stated, “Yara is delighted to be associated with the Best Frozen product award particularly considering that one of the major uses for Liquid Carbon Dioxide (LIC) is in the cryogenic freezing of food products”. Gerard added, “in recent years, the frozen product sector in supermarkets has been declining with the chilled foods sector growing. Many consumers view, often incorrectly, that frozen foods are of substantially poorer quality than chilled foods. Due to the low temperature of LIC (-78.9oC) compared with mechanical refrigeration (-30 o C), rapid freezing with LIC significantly reduces the texture and taste damage that can often be associated with the freezing of products. Yara has in recent years further progressed the technology and efficiency of cryogenic freezing with the launch of the SnoWin range of tunnel freezers X1, X2, X3 (single, dual & tri belt) . The SnoWin X9 is a multi belt cabinet freezer for Individually Quick Freezing (IQF) of foods where factory floor space is limited and is another example of Yara responding to the requirements of the frozen foods industry.” Gerard ended by stating, “both today’s award winner and also the finalists are indicative of the continued innovation and excellent quality of products produced by the UK Frozen Foods Industry, which undoubtedly will help to turn the trend in the coming years”.
