Back to Business
(2006-05-16) Since the beginning of 2006, Yara Industrial has been back in the UK Technical Urea business! Yara produces Urea at 4 locations in Europe and Technical Grade material for the UK is generally sourced from Brunsbuttel in Germany. Between 2001 and 2005 this was marketed in the U.K. through a third party distributor but at the end of last year we decided to appoint Nigel Goulding as Business Manager for this product, and to service the market ourselves. Nigel has considerable practical and commercial experience of Technical Urea and has quickly re-established his customer contacts. Technical Grade Urea is a very important starting material in a number of chemical syntheses, and is used on an industrial scale for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and resins. It is commonly found in many skin care products, and is used as a source of protein in animal feeds. Our Brunsbuttel plant produces over half a million tonnes of product each year to the exacting quality standards required for this type of applications. Production involves combining Ammonia and Carbon Dioxide to form liquid urea. Prills are formed as droplets of hot liquid material solidify during their descent from the top of a "prilling" tower. Mechanical screening ensures that any fine or over-size material is removed and that the despatched product meets the declared specification. Specialist ships are used to bring bulk material to our handling facilities at Seaham in North East England, where the product is stored and packed for delivery. Yara Technical Grade Urea is available in two standard grades. Treated prills incorporate a urea formaldehyde anti-caking agent which reduces the propensity of the product to absorb moisture. Untreated product is formaldehyde free giving it unique characteristics which are important for specialist industrial applications. Both products are white, free flowing prills that can be supplied in Bulk, "big bags" or 25kg bags on pallets.
