Urea

Production

Urea (CO (NH2) 2) is produced as a concentrated solution by combining NH3 and CO2 at high pressure. The solution is treated with an anti-caking agent, and then prills are formed when droplets of the hot liquid solidify as they fall from the top of the “prilling tower”. Mechanical screening ensures that any fine or over-size material is removed. Prilled Urea contains 46% Nitrogen. We also produce an untreated grade for certain applications, requiring a pure product.

Logistics

Yara is a leading European producer and supplier of Urea. We have 4 production sites in Europe. The Technical Grade material delivered to the UK is generally sourced from Brunsbuttel in Germany. Our Brunsbuttel plant produces over half a million tonnes of product each year to exacting quality standards.

Bulk material is shipped by sea to our handling facilities at Seaham in North East England or to other UK ports as required. Here the product is stored and packed before delivery to our customers.

Urea can be supplied in Bulk, “big bags” or 25 kg bags on pallets. Moreover, Urea is safe, easy to transport, handle and store because it is not classified as a hazardous product.

Typical areas of application

Technical Grade Urea is a very important starting material in a number of industrial applications :

  • Particle board production
  • Production of melamine
  • Manufacture of binding agents and polymers (urea formaldehyde resins)
  • Paper coatings
  • Metal coatings
  • Separation of fatty acids
  • Chemical synthesis (pharma intermediates)
  • Component in moisture creams
  • Nitrogen source in biofuel production
  • Nitrogen source in animal fodder
  • De-icing, agent as an alternative to rock salt

  • NOxCare is a grade of urea specified for use in the DeNOx process both catalytic and non-catalytic.
  •  AdBlue from Air1® is similarly a specified grade of urea in solution used as a DeNOx agent in commercial vehicles. For further information, see www.air1.info
