Yara has over a decade of expertise in DeNOx applications. NOxCare is Yara’s total solution to reduce NOx emissions from stationary and maritime sources. NOxCare covers a portfolio of products, reagents, processes and services. It is commercialised by Yara for stationary applications and by Yarwil, Yara’s joint venture with Wilhelmsen, for the maritime segment.
What are NOx? Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are gases hazardous to human health and the environment, which are formed during the combustion of fossil fuels. Together with sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides are the most significant cause of acid rain, which causes considerable damage to nature and the environment. In addition, NOx contributes to the formation of ground-level ozone and the excess fertilisation of watercourses. Sources of NOx include combustion units in power stations, industry, cars, trains and aircraft. How can NOx be removed ? NOx can be removed most effectively with the aid of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology, which is a well known technology, or without a catalyst (SNCR). SCR is the only one which can remove up to 95% of emissions. Unlike the other treatment methods, it does not cause any increase in fuel consumption, which would also boost carbon dioxide emissions. Urea is the most suitable reagent for shipboard use. Both urea and ammonia can be used in stationary applications.
